Introduction

When you start PawCalc for the first time, you will be asked to read the license agreement and indicate your agreement or disagreement with its terms. Read it carefully; it is a legal document. Afterwards (if you agree to the terms), you will be able to use PawCalc.

The main window in PawCalc consists of a number of buttons, two underlined lines for entering mathematical expressions, a field for displaying the results, and six pop-up lists.

PawCalc accepts mathematical expressions in the standard mathematical notation -- slightly adapted due to the character-based interface. Press the EXE button to evaluate an expression.

Example:

Enter the following expressions and press EXE after each one:

  • 1+2*3
  • 6--2
  • 4^2-7

The three expressions should evaluate to 7, 8, and 9, respectively.

The three pop-up lists to the rigth just above the '/' button give you access to the last 32 expressions (bottom list), the last 32 results (top list), and the available programs (middle list).

The "Edit" menu gives you access to the setup and preferences settings. You can access the built-in worksheets for loans, savings, and tips.

The "View" menu gives you the ability to change the base of the calculations (binary, octal, decimal, or hexadecimal), the way PawCalc should write numbers (scientific, engineering, fractions, etc), and whether PawCalc should work with degrees or radian. All the options under the "View" menu can also be access using "Preferences" in the "Edit"

The "Layout" menu lets you chose the layout of the buttons on the screen.

The "Help" menu gives access to the about screen, the registration screen, and keyboard and graffiti help.

It is also possible to control PawCalc (almost) without the stylus. You can use your up and down buttons to switch the current layout of buttons. If you have "Hardkeys" enabled (which is the default setting) in your preference settings, you can use the other hard keys to control PawCalc. The DateBook key accesses the menus. The select, left and right buttons (on the Tungsten T's 5-way navigation pad) selects between the six pop-up lists. The AddressBook key toggles between normal mode and button-select mode, where you can use the hardkeys to select individual buttons. In button-select mode, use can move the "cursor" around using the Tungsten T's 5-way navigation pad, or you can use your up and down buttons, the Todo and Calc/Favorite key, and the DateBook key to select an entry.
